October 12, 2008 Hi Randy, We just wanted to thank you for taking our Irish Setter, Brandy, and training her. We cannot believe the difference in her behavior after only 2 ½ weeks. When you took her, she continuously bit Barb’s hands and Barb’s mother’s hands; put her front feet on the counter, climbed up on the counter; jumped up on people; ran and jumped on the furniture to play. If we were sitting on the furniture, she would run and jump on us. She pee’ed and pooped in the house. She would do it right in front of us. It seemed like she didn’t get it that peeing and pooping was for outdoors. She would be outside for over a half hour and then would come inside and relieve herself. The culminating incident that made us think maybe we shouldn’t keep her is when she growled and snapped at Barb when Barb was trying to see what she was chewing on. We have had three other Irish Setters in the past and have never had much difficulty training them. Brandy just seemed out of control and wanted us to adjust to her life-style…everyone was going to play by her rules. At any rate, we appreciate you taking her. When you brought her back, she was a different dog. We are following your instructions of “exercise, discipline with attention coming last” (although she does get a lot of attention) I wasn’t sure about using the “E Collar” but using it as you described makes all the difference in the world. She is minding. She does not jump on the counter and seems to be housebroken. I cannot believe the first time I took her for a walk. Before you took her, she rolled around on the ground, fought the leash, bit my hands and it was just impossible to walk her. The past two nights I have taken her downtown and walked her on Main Street. She walks right along, taking in all the noises and sights, but she doesn’t pull away or jump at dogs or people. I have been following your instructions as to when she gets a little ahead of me, I just quickly turn the other direction and walk a little way then turn back and she is back to walking beside me as she should. There are times when she is too rambunctious in the house and she does not settle down. At that time, we put her in her kennel which per your instructions is in a room all by herself. We show no attention when she is in her kennel. When we let her out, she has become calm and obeys the rules. We make her know that the inside of the home is for “calm” and the outdoors is “running and playing”. We have taken all her toys away from her inside of the house except her hard chew bone. I don’t mean that she is now a perfect dog, but following your instructions, using the E collar, we now have a puppy that we enjoy and love. Thank you again for all your help! Bob & Barb Meyers |
