We Do The Hard Work So You Don't Have To

Some people have difficulties with potty training as soon as the pup gets home. I believe the breeder has a direct effect on the potty training process. If the pups have been in a basement until 7 weeks of age, they have learned to potty on the floor.

There is a process I do when raising young pups to be a productive part of our society. In other words, well-mannered and obedient. I start out by attaching a leash on the pup and let it drag the leash around. I want the pup to get used to the leash because that is the most important tool in dog training.

We use the leash to communicate with the dog, teach the correct direction and to teach the dog that running from us is not an option (step on the leash). As the pup matures we drag a 15’ long leash when outdoors. The leash is just a security measure to give the dog freedom to roam yet be able to catch him if he decides to play chase me.

To teach sit, down, place, come, follow, wait, and heel – reward your dog. In our puppy classes, we use food rewards (hotdogs work great!). In fact, in our puppy classes we not only teach basic obedience, but we also do confidence building exercises and socialization.

After the pup is 16 weeks I introduce a remote collar. The remote collar is similar to the leash as it’s used to communicate with the pup. Think of the remote collar as an invisible leash. When I was a police K-9 officer, my dog was very obedient. But after I attended a remote collar course, and my K9 was phenomenal.

I thought “I bet the public would like phenomenal dogs they could take anywhere and would be well behaved too,” so I started Adams K-9 in 2009 and we have been growing ever since.

I believe our success comes from the love of dogs, phenomenal results, the ability to make people’s lives easier.

A trainer once told me I give out too much information. I said my clients are busy adults who work, have children, are busy and once they add a dog to the mix, they figure out that they do not have the time to train it.

Sure, there are owner responsibilities especially if they want the phenomenal dog. There is maintaining the training, following our instructions for success, and consistency. But the hard work is done for them.

After two weeks with us, the dog is doing pretty well. But, yes, I provide training videos on YouTube and a free dog training video if you sign up for our newsletter. I write blog posts giving out tons of free information. I want people to have well-trained dogs whether they train with us or not.

Maybe they don’t like our training philosophies, and some do not, but that’s okay. I will refer them to another local trainer who is a better fit for them.

Dogs can be difficult to train and unless you are a professional, there can be a lot of frustration and work. A professional dog trainer has a lot of tricks and tools in their toolbox, such as clear communication, timing, consequences both positive and negative.

Jump on me you do not get the treat. Sit and you do. That is the layman’s version, but you get the point.
